Hentai does not mean anime in Japanese

This is the largest gap between an English word and its Japanese source anywhere in adult media, and almost every English speaker has it backwards.
In English, hentai means animated pornography. It is a genre name, used neutrally, and it is what the word does on English-language sites.
In Japanese, 変態 means pervert. It is a word about a person. It is not a genre, it is not about animation, and it is not neutral.

Where the divergence happened
変 (hen) is strange or abnormal; 態 (tai) is a state or condition. The compound originally belonged to scientific vocabulary — it is still the standard Japanese word for metamorphosis in biology, the process an insect goes through.
In the early twentieth century it acquired a second sense in psychology, in the phrase 変態性欲 (hentai seiyoku), meaning abnormal sexual desire. That shortened over decades to plain 変態, applied to a person.
The English meaning arrived separately. Early English-speaking fans of Japanese animation encountered the word attached to explicit material, took it as the name of the category, and it stuck. By the time anyone noticed the mismatch, the English usage was established.
Japanese has its own words for the animated genre, and none of them is this one.
How the word is actually used in Japan
As an insult, most of the time. Called across a room it means what “pervert” means in English, with the same range from joking to genuinely hostile.
It is also used self-referentially and even affectionately in some contexts, in the way English speakers occasionally reclaim an insult. But the default register is negative, and a learner should treat it as a word to recognise rather than a word to use.
My Wife Part2What the tag does on this site
Almost nothing. It covers 8 titles — eight — out of 6,274.
The titles run from January 2005 to May 2015, so it is another abandoned label. It is the smallest category in the catalogue by a wide margin.
The English navigation gives it no name. We gloss it as Fetish, because that is closest to what the eight titles have in common as a marketing signal, and because glossing it as “Pervert” in a category list would be misleading in a different direction.
Why English speakers keep finding this site by mistake
Search for hentai in English and the results are overwhelmingly animated. This site has no animated material at all — every one of the 6,274 titles is live action.
If you arrived expecting animation, this is the wrong place, and we would rather say so on the first screen than have you work it out three clicks in.
If you arrived because you saw the word on a Japanese page and wondered what it meant, now you know: it says something about a person, not about a medium.

Ecchi (エッチ) is the mild one — suggestive rather than explicit. It comes from the letter H, itself an abbreviation of hentai, which is a nice illustration of how far the word has travelled inside Japanese alone.
Chikan (痴漢) is groping, and specifically the criminal offence. It is not a compliment or a genre in Japanese either, and it is the male counterpart to chijyo, which the English navigation here mistranslates as Slut.
Between these, the pattern is consistent: Japanese adult vocabulary that English has borrowed has usually changed meaning on the way across, and usually in the direction of becoming a neutral genre name. We have collected the ones that matter on our glossary page.
The short version
- English hentai = animated pornography. Japanese 変態 = pervert
- The word is not a genre name in Japanese and never was
- It began as a biology term for metamorphosis, then psychology, then an insult
- The tag here covers eight titles, last applied in 2015
- This site is entirely live action — no animation at all
