R18 is gone. What English buyers do now

For years there was one obvious answer to “where do I buy Japanese adult video legally in English.” It was R18.com, run by DMM, with English titles, English search and a card checkout that worked from anywhere.
The three-day trial covers the whole library. What it does and does not include, in plain terms.
It closed in 2022. The domain no longer serves a site — a request to r18.com returns an error rather than a page.
Four years later, most English-language advice still has not caught up.
This page contains affiliate links. Prices and plan details are what the official site showed in November 2026.
What R18 actually was
It was DMM’s English-facing storefront. Same catalogue as the Japanese operation, translated interface, and — the part that mattered — a checkout that accepted foreign cards without pretending you were in Japan.
That combination is rarer than it sounds. Plenty of Japanese services will show you a catalogue. Very few will take your money.
What replaced it, officially
DMM pointed users towards FANZA, its Japanese-language brand. On paper that is the successor: a bigger catalogue, more formats, subscription options.
In practice, for someone outside Japan, it is a different product. The interface is Japanese. Region restrictions apply to parts of the service. The account system assumes a Japanese context. It is the same company, but it is not the same offer.
So the honest answer to “what replaced R18” is: nothing replaced it exactly. The English-facing legal storefront went away and was not rebuilt.
I really want to have sex ~The return of a national treasure-class beauty~What that left behind
A gap, and the gap filled itself with two things.
Pirate streaming. The large uncensored streaming domains grew into the space, and they now dominate almost every English search that contains a performer’s name or a title. They are free, they are fast, and they are funded by advertising you did not agree to run.
Downloader software. Search for a Japanese adult site plus the words “free trial” in English and the first results are not the site’s own trial. They are companies selling software that rips video from it — KeepStreams, StreamFab, CleverGet and others, each offering their own 30-day trial. They are not answering your question. They are answering a different one that happens to share your keywords.
Neither of those is “buying it legally.” That question genuinely lost its answer.
What still exists
The subscription sites that publish uncensored material outside Japan’s domestic distribution rules never went anywhere. Caribbeancom is one of them, and unlike DMM it has an English side with an English signup that takes foreign cards.
Two things are worth being precise about.
It is a subscription, not a store. R18 sold you a title and you kept it. This is access while you pay. If your model was “buy the specific film I want and own it,” that model is largely gone for English buyers.
It is a different catalogue. Caribbeancom mostly shoots its own material — 5,107 of its 6,274 titles are in-house productions. That is not the DMM back-catalogue under a new name. If you had a specific mainstream title from R18 in mind, this will not have it.
Naughty Woman : Sanae HosodaHow to think about the change
The English-language options collapsed from “buy individual titles from a huge licensed catalogue” to “subscribe to a studio that publishes its own work.” That is a narrower proposition, and pretending otherwise helps nobody.
What it gains is the thing R18 could not offer: uncensored material, legitimately, with a card, from outside Japan.
What it loses is ownership and breadth.
If you want the specific mainstream title you remember, no legal English route exists today that we can point you to. If what you want is a large body of uncensored work you can watch without running someone’s ad network, that route does exist, and it costs nothing for the first three days.
The short version
- R18.com closed in 2022 and the domain no longer serves a site
- DMM pointed users to FANZA, which is Japanese-language and region-restricted in parts
- Nothing rebuilt the English-facing legal storefront. The gap filled with piracy and ripping software
- Subscription sites publishing outside Japan’s domestic rules are still there and still take foreign cards
- The trade is ownership and breadth for uncensored access that is legitimately paid for
