Finding Titles

801 performers appear in exactly one title

A single card set apart from the stack — performers who appear exactly once

Count every performer credited anywhere in the catalogue and you get 1,952 people. Count how many appear in exactly one title and you get 801.

That is 41% of everyone who has ever appeared here, and it is the single most useful fact about how this catalogue is built.

The full shape

Sorted by how many titles each person appears in:

  • 801 performers appear once
  • 925 appear between two and five times
  • 226 appear six times or more

So 88% of credited performers have five titles or fewer. The people you would think of as regulars are a group of about two hundred, and even the most prolific among them tops out at 39.

Why the studio works this way

It publishes continuously. New titles arrive several times a week, every week, and have done for over twenty years.

Sustaining that from a small contracted roster is not possible. So casting is wide and largely one-off, and the catalogue accumulates a very long tail of people who appear once.

This is different from how a Western subscription site is usually built, where a smaller group of contracted performers appears repeatedly and the site’s identity is partly their identity. Here, the studio’s identity is the format, not the cast.

What this means when you are browsing

Following a performer is a weaker strategy here than it would be elsewhere. If you liked a title and the performer has one credit, there is nothing else to follow.

The reliable route is the series. There are 115 named series covering 2,952 titles, and a series holds its format, length and approach steady across entries in a way that no performer’s filmography does. We make this argument in more detail in the note on the series tag.

The second-best route is the category, with the large caveat that several of the biggest categories cover most of the catalogue and filter almost nothing. One of them is on 74% of everything.

Why we only built 239 performer pages

Because below six titles, the numbers stop meaning anything.

A performer page here carries an average rating, a spread of what kind of titles she appears in, which categories attach most often to her work, and whose filmography looks similar. Every one of those is a calculation over her credits.

Run them on two titles and you get numbers that look authoritative and are noise. An “average rating” from two titles is not an average. A “type” derived from two sets of tags is a coin flip.

Six was where we drew the line. It is a judgement call and we would rather state it than hide it.

What we lose by drawing it there

Coverage. Those 239 pages account for 2,374 credits — 43% of the catalogue’s total. The other 57% belongs to people with no page here.

That is a real gap and we are not going to pretend otherwise. If the performer you are looking for appeared once in 2009, this site will not have a page for her, and no amount of searching will change that.

What you can do is work from the title rather than the person. Open the title, read the credit, and use the catalogue’s own listing.

The debut angle

A single credit is not always a one-off. Some of those 801 are first appearances that did not lead anywhere; others are performers whose later work went to different studios.

There is a separate label for the first uncensored appearance specifically — hatsuura, 509 titles — and it is the more precise thing to search on if what interests you is a debut rather than a one-off.
