3P is how Japanese writes threesome

Browse the category list and you will find one labelled simply 3P. No English name, no explanation. It covers 610 titles.
It means threesome. The reason it looks cryptic is that it is an abbreviation of an English phrase that English speakers never actually shortened this way.

Where the P comes from
The P stands for play. Japanese took the English word, kept the initial, and built a counting system on it: 3P for three people, 4P for four, 5P upward from there.
This is a common pattern in Japanese. English words get borrowed, abbreviated aggressively, and then used in ways that no longer track the original. The construction is transparent to a Japanese reader and opaque to an English one, which is exactly why it should have been translated in the navigation and was not.
You will see the same numbering on other Japanese adult sites, so it is worth learning once. If you encounter 4P elsewhere, it is four people, not a sequel.
What the number counts
It counts bodies in the scene, not any particular arrangement of them. A 3P title might be two men and one woman, or two women and one man. The tag does not distinguish.
If the arrangement matters to you, the tag alone will not tell you and you will need to read the individual title. Some of the English titles are explicit about it; many are not.
The Soul Of Actress: Special Edition Before RetireWhere it sits against the bigger tag
There is a separate Orgy tag, 乱交 in Japanese, covering 992 titles. That is the one for larger groups. The boundary between them is not sharply policed — some titles carry both — but as a rule of thumb, 3P is the specific count and Orgy is “more than that, unspecified.”
If you want group scenes generally, filtering Orgy gets you more. If you want exactly three, 3P is the closer label.
What the 610 titles look like
They run from 2003 to the present, so this is an active category. The median runtime is 62 minutes against a catalogue median of 61, but the average is 67 — a longer tail than usual, with the longest running just over three hours.
That longer tail makes sense. Scenes with more people in them tend to run longer.
The rating average is 4.64 against a catalogue average of 4.56, which is a small but real difference in this tag’s favour.
Ryu Enami's practical instruction on the sex method to please a man - Cumming Nipple editionPerformer spread is extremely flat
401 different performers appear across 610 titles, and the most frequent appears in five. That is close to no repetition at all.
Compare that to the catalogue as a whole, where the most prolific performer appears in 39 titles. Group scenes here are not built around a regular cast — they are assembled per production.
The practical consequence: if you found a 3P title you liked, following the performer is unlikely to lead you to more of the same. Following the series is more productive. 61 named series contain at least one, and the largest concentrations are in the studio’s long-format and anthology lines.
Why the label was left in Japanese
Our guess is that whoever built the English navigation saw “3P” written in Latin characters and assumed it needed no translation. It is already alphanumeric, so it does not look like a Japanese word that has been skipped.
That is the trap. The characters are Latin, the meaning is not. Several categories on this site have this shape, and we have collected all of them with plain English glosses on the glossary page.

Please Forgive MeThe short version
- 3P means threesome. The P is short for “play”
- The system extends: 4P is four people, and so on
- It counts people, not the arrangement — the tag will not tell you the mix
- 610 titles, active since 2003, rated slightly above the catalogue average
- For larger groups, the separate Orgy tag covers 992
